Challah Bread

Ingredients

  1. 7 to 7 1/2 c. wheat flour
  2. 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  3. 2 c. water
  4. 1/4 c. sugar
  5. 1/4 c. butter
  6. 2 tsp. salt
  7. 3 eggs
  8. 1 egg yolk
  9. 1 Tbsp. water
  10. poppy seed

Directions

  1. In large bowl, combine 3 cups flour and yeast.
  2. In saucepan, heat 2 cups water, sugar, butter and salt just until warm (115° to 120°) and butter is almost melted.
  3. Stir constantly.
  4. Add flour mixture; add 3 eggs.
  5. Beat at low speed of electric mixer 1/2 minute, scraping bowl.
  6. Beat 3 minutes at high speed.
  7. Stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can; mix in with a spoon.
